Next 2 Tolkien Society Meetings

by Hawke Robinson last modified Jun 17, 2011 10:34 AM
The next 2 Tolkien Society meetings are scheduled for the usual 2nd Saturday of each month, that is July 9th (the week before Tolkien Moot VII) and August13th, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the usual Cafe Delicio on 2301 North Monroe, Spokane, Washington.

Each meeting we decide on some reading assignments to undertake before the following meeting. These assignments are COMPLETELY OPTIONAL, you do not need to have started or completed them in order to attend the meeting and be active. They arejust a way to give a little guidance and focus, but we welcome any other topics of discussion you may wish. So, with that disclaimer, here are the assignments for July's upcoming meeting:

  • Read Tolkien Letter 13.  Topic: international appeal for the Hobbit, especially in America.  how JRRT felt about that, and his negative comment about Disney's dwarves.
  • Also, there is a research challenge: Find any passages referring to elves, men, dwarves, and hobbits seeing underground or in the darkness.  Is the urban legend true, that dwarves in Middle-Earth can see in absolute darkness?  How do the races compare with each other in terms of night-vision?  Email your comments through Tolkien Scholars email list, or use the contact form here:  http://www.tolkienscholars.org/contact-info

We look forward to seeing you all at the next meeting.

Namarie!
