Inland Northwest Tolkien Society Meeting Minutes from January 9th 2010.
Attendance was light this month, but promising for a significant increase in coming months. This page quickly lists the topics covered in this meeting...
Topics Discussed:
Review from last month of the opening introduction to "The Golden Key" by George McDonald in the book "Tales Before Tolkien".
Discussed Brian's love of McDonald's works. Discussed Tolkien's change of opinion of his works from supportive to vitriolic, and why he may have done so.
discussed maybe loss of touch with "inner child" as he had in Roverrandom and Hobbit, and diminishing respect in the LotR. How he became so
fixed on Silmarillion being part of LotR and his delaysin publication of LotR trying to find a publisher to publish it together., and his having to rewrite to include what he considered key aspects from Sil. that he felt had to be in there for the context of LotR, versus how it would have been if Sil already part of the set.
Briefly went through the Hammond & Scull illustrated book "J.R.R. Tolkien - Artist & Illustrator".
Briefly touched on Tolkien and the environment. Brian said relative wrote his master's thesis on similar topic, and would try to get a copy of that.
Briefly touched fon Roverrandom.
Discussed plans for Tolkien Moot 2010 in Spokane.
Site is arranged on Monroe and Maxwell.
Still need to solidify date, pricing (or will it still be free this year?), guest speakers, and event details. Planning for this to be a smaller event this year maybe.
Administrivia Notes:
Finish fixing the website: Done, can now post new content no problem.
Brian's blog: www.huseland.blogspot.com
Need to get Brian added to the email discussion list.
Plan to have assigned reading item for discussion at next meeting.
Plan to have flyers to distribute ready for next meeting, and/or available as downloadable PDF file so others can download, print, and spread around.
I (Hawke) need to keep better meeting notes as the meeting progresses rather than trying to recall from memory. As the group grows, we'll assign someone at each meeting as "Society Secretary" to keep notes as the meeting progresses.
